Belize Mayan Ruin

The Maya people built and occupied ceremonial structures, some of which haven’t been used for over a thousand years yet still stand today. Several of these pyramid like structures stand in protected areas of Belize, amidst other historical buildings and, because these areas are protected, many species of animals abound.

Belize Mayan Ruin

Vacationers can enjoy a tour to a Belize Mayan ruin. There are several, each with a different history. Tourists will enjoy a scenic trip to the ruin, as well as the opportunity to view or even to climb on the architectural artifact. Local guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the tours can even be combined with other activities such as cave tubing through Mayan underground rivers. One of these amazing tours, available from Tuff ‘E’ Nuff Tours, is a good way to appreciate the history of the Mayans.

The Mayan ruin of Xunantunich (zshoo-NAN-too-NEECH) was the first site in Belize to be opened to the public. This ceremonial center is made up of large pyramids arranged around plazas, with the tallest pyramid being the 130ft tall El Castillo. Vacationers can take the short, steep climb to the top to enjoy the breathtaking view from one of the tallest Mayan pyramids. Climbers can see a panoramic view of the surrounding Cayo district and Guatemala. This is also an opportunity to view El Castillo’s famous frieze, which once extended all the way around the pyramid.

This Belize Mayan ruin was occupied by Mayans until 900AD. It is built in the Classic (300-900AD) style.

Another large ruin, Lamanai, is built in the Pre-Classic style. This Mayan ceremonial center, one of the largest of the Mayan buildings, was occupied for 3000 years, until around 1650 AD. It is located in a remote area of the jungle which is now a protected area. The Lamanai Mayan ruin site also contains a museum of Mayan artifacts, as well as the remains of 16 th century Catholic ruins and a sugar mill. Because of its remoteness, travelers to this site will appreciate a scenic trip through Belizean jungle, filled with many animals of interest.
